International Mobility Fellowships — Commonwealth Scholarships and Fulbright-Nehru Fellowships

i) Scheme Type
  • International scholarship/fellowship programmes facilitated for Indian students and scholars, coordinated in India by the Ministry of Education (Department of Higher Education).
  • Commonwealth Scholarships and Fellowships (for study in the United Kingdom) are administered in India through the Ministry of Education and the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission.
  • Fulbright-Nehru Fellowships (for study and research in the United States) are administered by the United States-India Educational Foundation (USIEF), a bi-national body.
ii) Objectives
  • Enable meritorious Indian students, researchers and professionals to pursue advanced study and research abroad.
  • Promote international academic mobility, collaboration and cross-cultural exchange.
  • Build long-term institutional and people-to-people linkages between India and partner countries.
  • Develop a pool of globally exposed academicians, researchers and leaders who contribute to India's development.
iii) Eligibility Criteria
  • Commonwealth Scholarships: Indian citizens, generally for master's and doctoral study or split-site research at UK universities; nominated through the Ministry of Education as per notified eligibility (academic merit and a recognized degree with the prescribed marks).
  • Fulbright-Nehru Master's Fellowship: Indian citizens with the equivalent of a US bachelor's degree (minimum 55% marks), at least three years of professional work experience and demonstrated leadership.
  • Fulbright-Nehru Doctoral / Academic & Professional Excellence Fellowships: Indian scholars registered for a Ph.D. at an Indian institution, or faculty/researchers/professionals; employees of the Government of India and State Governments are not eligible, though researchers from CSIR, ISRO, DRDO, ICMR, DST/DBT institutions, IISc and IITs may apply.
  • English-language proficiency (IELTS/TOEFL as applicable) and a strong, feasible study/research proposal are required.
iv) Terms & Conditions
  • Fellowships are awarded on a competitive, merit basis through national selection committees.
  • Awardees must return to India and contribute to their field/community after completion (Fulbright-Nehru).
  • Concurrent funding from another source for the same purpose is generally not permitted.
  • Continuation depends on satisfactory academic progress and compliance with grant conditions.

UGC-NET Junior Research Fellowship and Senior Research Fellowship (JRF/SRF)

i) Scheme Type
  • Central Sector Fellowship Scheme of the University Grants Commission (UGC), Ministry of Education, Government of India.
  • Awarded to candidates who qualify the UGC-NET (and CSIR-UGC NET for science subjects) with Junior Research Fellowship eligibility.
  • Supports full-time doctoral (Ph.D.) research in Indian universities and institutions.
ii) Objectives

  • JRF is awarded initially for two years and may be upgraded to Senior Research Fellowship (SRF) after satisfactory assessment.
  • House Rent Allowance (HRA) is admissible as per Government of India norms if hostel accommodation is not availed.
  • An annual contingency grant is provided, with higher rates for Science subjects than Humanities and Social Sciences.
  • Fellows are entitled to leave, including maternity and paternity leave, as per UGC norms.
  • Continuation of the fellowship is subject to satisfactory progress and monthly attendance certification by the supervisor.

  • The fellowship is granted up to the date of submission of the Ph.D. thesis or for a maximum period of five years, whichever is earlier.
  • An annual contingency grant and escort/reader allowance (for differently-abled scholars) are provided in addition to the monthly fellowship.
  • Continuation of the fellowship is subject to satisfactory academic progress.
  • The fellow cannot avail another fellowship for the same purpose simultaneously.

WISE-KIRAN — Women in Science and Engineering Programmes

i) Scheme Type
  • Central Sector umbrella programme — Women in Science and Engineering-KIRAN (Knowledge Involvement in Research Advancement through Nurturing) — of the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India.
  • Restructured from the earlier Women Scientists Scheme (WOS-A/B/C) into focused components such as WISE-PhD and WISE Post-Doctoral Fellowship (WISE-PDF).

  • Applicants are generally unemployed women researchers or women not holding regular positions.
  • Specific eligibility conditions and age limits are governed by the component-wise guidelines issued by DST.

  • Support is generally available for a maximum tenure, commonly up to five years for WISE-PhD, subject to satisfactory progress.

Ministry of Earth Sciences Research, Fellowship and Collaboration Programmes

i) Scheme Type
  • Central Sector research, fellowship and collaboration programmes of the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), Government of India.
  • Supports research, capacity-building and academic collaboration in atmospheric, ocean, polar, seismological and earth-system sciences.
  • Implemented through MoES institutions such as IITM, INCOIS, NCPOR, NCESS and the National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting.
ii) Objectives
  • Promote and fund research in earth-system sciences including atmosphere, ocean, cryosphere, geosciences and seismology.

  • Concurrent funding for the same purpose from another source is generally not permitted.
