PM-USP — Central Sector Scholarship Scheme

i) Scheme Type
  • Central Sector Scholarship Scheme under the Pradhan Mantri Uchchatar Shiksha Protsahan (PM-USP) Yojana.
  • Implemented by the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education, Government of India.
  • Merit-cum-means based scholarship for higher education students.
ii) Objectives
  • Provide financial assistance to meritorious students from economically weaker families.
  • Enable students to pursue higher education without financial hardship.

  • Renewable annually subject to satisfactory academic performance.
  • Student must continue the approved course without interruption.
  • False information or concealment of facts may lead to cancellation and recovery of amounts.

  • Maximum continuation: up to five years depending on course duration.

  • Admission must be in the 1st year of a Degree/Diploma programme or 2nd year through lateral entry.
  • Institution must be AICTE-approved.
  • Annual family income should not exceed ₹8 lakh.

UGC Special Scholarships — National Scholarship for Postgraduate Studies (NSPG) and Ishan Uday Special Scholarship

i) Scheme Type
  • Central Sector Scholarship Schemes of the University Grants Commission (UGC) under the Ministry of Education, Government of India.
  • Comprises two distinct UGC scholarships administered through the National Scholarship Portal (NSP): the National Scholarship for Postgraduate Studies (NSPG) and the Ishan Uday Special Scholarship Scheme for the North Eastern Region (NER).
  • Merit-based financial assistance disbursed directly to students through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT).
ii) Objectives
  • Provide financial assistance to meritorious students pursuing higher education in India.

  • Ishan Uday Special Scholarship: Students domiciled in any of the North Eastern states (Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, Tripura) who have passed Class XII in the preceding year from a recognized Board within the NER and secured admission in the first year of a general degree / technical / professional / medical / paramedical course.
  • For Ishan Uday: annual family income from all sources must not exceed ₹4.5 lakh.
  • Students availing any other scholarship for the same purpose, or studying through open/distance/management-quota modes, or in diploma courses, are generally not eligible.
iv) Terms & Conditions
  • Scholarship is renewable every year subject to satisfactory academic progress and continuation of the approved course.
  • Scholarship is paid for ten months in a year and is transferred directly to the student's Aadhaar-linked bank account through DBT.
  • Under NSPG, in the case of integrated programmes the scholarship is payable only for the postgraduate component.
  • Concealment of facts or submission of false information may lead to cancellation and recovery of the amount.

  • Central Sector Programme — Innovation in Science Pursuit for Inspired Research (INSPIRE) — of the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India.
  • A composite scheme with multiple components covering scholarships for higher education (SHE), doctoral fellowships and faculty fellowships.
  • Aimed at attracting, nurturing and retaining talent in the study and pursuit of science.
ii) Objectives
  • Attract meritorious youth to study natural and basic sciences at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

  • INSPIRE Fellowship: INSPIRE scholars and other meritorious candidates (age group generally 22-27 years) pursuing or enrolling for Ph.D. in basic and applied sciences, including engineering, medicine, agriculture and veterinary sciences.
  • INSPIRE Faculty Fellowship: Indian citizens / PIO with a Ph.D. (or awaiting award) in science, mathematics, engineering, pharmacy, medicine or agriculture, with a minimum of 60% marks throughout from Class XII onwards; upper age limit generally 32 years (with relaxations for SC/ST/Women/Divyangjan).
iv) Terms & Conditions
  • Each component is governed by its own guidelines and selection process notified by DST from time to time.
  • SHE scholars are required to undertake summer research projects / mentorship as prescribed.
  • Fellowships are tenable at recognized institutions and are subject to satisfactory academic and research progress.
  • Beneficiaries cannot avail another fellowship/scholarship concurrently for the same purpose.

  • Aadhaar Card / Identity Proof.
  • Academic Transcripts, Mark Sheets and Degree Certificates.
  • Rank Certificate / Eligibility Certificate (for SHE and Fellowship).
  • Ph.D. Registration / Admission details (for Fellowship).
  • Research Proposal and Curriculum Vitae (for Faculty Fellowship).
  • Category Certificate (if applicable) and Bank Account details.
  • Recent Passport-size Photograph.
vi) How to Apply
  1. Visit the INSPIRE web portal: online-inspire.gov.in.
  2. Register and select the relevant component (SHE / Fellowship / Faculty Fellowship).
  3. Complete the online application and upload supporting documents.
  4. Submit within the notified application window.
  5. Applications are evaluated and shortlisted candidates are intimated through the portal; the Faculty Fellowship involves a multi-tier expert review.
